The Ultimate Race

The Ultimate Race
Hebrews 12:1-3

The Christian life can be joyous, adventurous, and fulfilling. It also can bring some of the most difficult hardships, suffering, and persecution imaginable. The Bible pictures our life in Christ as both a walk and a race, and Hebrews 12:1-3 stresses one important facet of this long and arduous marathon—endurance.

Endurance doesn’t mean simply putting up with circumstances and remaining calm. It means to persevere, to never give in, to take initiative and exert yourself—until exhaustion if need be—to gain the victory. Endurance means being active, not passive. Rather than sitting back and weakly accepting the trials of life, the enduring spirit stands tall, faces trials, and actively seeks to conquer and overcome them. It means being filled with steadfastness and true grit while leaning upon the power of the Holy Spirit and the truth of God’s promises.

Jesus warned us that following Him would bring trials, persecution, and hardship—and that it would even create divisions among families and friends. Yet He promises to help us endure, to strengthen us, and to assist us in laying aside every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles us. (Hebrews 12:1) He assures us that He causes all things to work together for our good. (Romans 8:28)

Jesus also modeled endurance for us: by obeying the heavenly Father’s will even unto death, He provided the glorious resurrection life for everyone who trusts Him as Lord and Savior. Amen.

Grace and peace to you,
