Life Lessons From Your Garden

Life Lessons From Your Garden
"Look at the birds of the air . . . . See how the lilies of the field grow." Matthew 6:26, 28

In the teaching tradition of Jewish rabbis, Jesus uses the world as his classroom. To the people gathered on a hillside to hear him preach, Jesus points to a flock of birds flying overhead. Then he draws everyone's attention to a field of wildflowers. From these observations of nature Jesus draws a powerful parallel to our everyday lives. He teaches that worry is both foolish and unnecessary because we have a heavenly Father who cares for us.

God's creation still gives us many interesting and powerful parallels to life. One thing we observe is that weeds grow naturally, while fruits, vegetables, and flowers need to be planted and cared for. In a parallel life lesson, we can see that human vices also grow and develop in us without our effort. Part of sin's curse is that bad attitudes and bad habits spring up on their own. Godly virtues, on the other hand, need to be intentionally planted and constantly cared for. They don't just happen automatically.

We also observe that many weeds look rather innocent, even attractive, at first. But if they're allowed to grow, those weeds turn ugly and destructive. In parallel with our daily lives we can see that many sins also look innocent, even attractive, at first. But if given free rein in our hearts, they will turn ugly and destructive.

Lord, we pray for strength, wisdom and grace to bear the fruit of the Spirit. Increase our faith and help us see your loving care for us. In Jesusí name. Amen.

Grace and peace to you,

For Mercy Street Ministries, Iím Stan Baldwin.
