The House That Wisdom Built

The House That Wisdom Built

“Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn out its seven pillars.” - Proverbs 9:1

When we started out this summer series, we looked at the proverb “The fear of the Lord is the beginning . . .” (Proverbs 1:7). Well, in Proverbs 9:10 we find that proverb again: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” In Proverbs 9:1 we also learn that “wisdom has built her house.”

A house is a place to live, a place to call home. It’s a place of security, shelter, and protection. Living in wisdom’s house means living life under the cover of a “fear” that is not terror but is awe and reverence. It’s the only way we should want to live.

Did you notice that this house wisdom built has “seven pillars”? God’s Old Testament people thought of the number seven as symbolizing perfection and completion. To live in a seven-pillared house is to live in a place that is perfectly complete and supported. It means living in a place of real security and dependability. To live in God’s will is to live a life you can count on.

What a comfort it is to know that you can live a life that matters and you can make a difference with that life. Live it for God. Live it within God’s will. Live it with him. As Peter taught later: “You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:5).

PRAYER
Dear God, help us build a life that matters. Help us live a life that stands for you and is built on you. Hold us up perfectly in your will and your Word, now and forever. Amen.

Grace and peace to you,

For Mercy Street Ministries, I’m Stan Baldwin.
