Ordinary Christians, Heroic Witness...
"Let your light shine . . . that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16
Last week I wrote about people around the world being persecuted for their faith in Christ, and that may have left you thinking, "But things are different here," or, "Things sure are different in my life."
Matthew 5:16 though, makes clear that being God's salt and light in a needy world is for everyone. Salt isn't much good if left to itself, and a light that's hidden helps no one. Being a blessing to the people around us is something that Jesus puts on every believer's agenda. And faithful living by ordinary Christian people can be expected to bring hardship.
A Sunday school teacher I know is impressed by a young mother who works extra hard to see that her small children are present as much as possible for Sunday school and worship. Her estranged husband makes it difficult for her to keep a regular schedule with their children, but she persists, making sure her kids keep up even when they have to miss. This woman endures real hardship for her children's sake and for the cause of Christ.
The first centuries after Jesus' time on earth were threatening times. Christ's followers rose to the challenge. The gospel spread and the church grew because everyday believers-ordinary Christians in every conceivable walk of life-witnessed to the love and power of Jesus.
Our Father in heaven, help us to help people we know whose Christian walk is no bed of roses. Please also keep them safe from mistreatment, Lord. In Jesusí name we pray. Amen.
Grace and peace to you,
For Mercy Street Ministries, Iím Stan Baldwin.
