Gift From a Loving Heart
“This poor widow has put in more than all the others…” – Luke 21:3
A few years ago, a huge tornado tore through the Oklahoma countryside, devastating many farms, houses, and half of a small town.
I read of a family who lost their home, farm, and business. All of their possessions were lost, including those of the family's eight-year-old daughter.
Hearing about this family's plight, a friend of the eight-year-old girl decided to help. She invited her friend - the child who had lost everything she had - to come over to her house. When the little girl arrived, she found that her friend had divided all her possessions into two piles -- clothes, books, toys, even pets. She said to her friend, "I want you to have half of my things. You choose which half."
This story stops me in my tracks. A young child beautifully conveys the unselfish love of the poor widow in our Bible passage for today. Generous love is at the heart of the good news of Jesus, who died for us "while we were still sinners" (Romans 5:8). Like people who saw the poor widow who gave generously, many people heard about this Oklahoma girl's beautiful act of sharing. Her generosity encouraged others to give unselfishly. Her gift and the gift of the poor widow encourage me to be a witness by helping someone in need and pointing people to Jesus.
Dear God, you love a cheerful giver. Help me to show how much I depend on you by doing unselfish things that point people to your love and sacrifice. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Grace and peace to you,
